20/03/19: P22 departing from Sandwich to Dover
The P22 Gunboat is truly a unique historic vessel as she was built by the Germans to an American design and was initially operated by the US Navy from 1952-1958. By 1958 Germany had a stable government and was permitted to establish a peacekeeping army and all 17 of these patrol vessels were handed to the German army who continued the work of surveying the Southern Rhine and fully re-opening it for commercial traffic. By the end of the 1960’s this work had been completed and the vessels were all sold off. so far as we’re aware, the P22 is the only remaining vessel of the class remaining fully operational.
The USN P22 is a charitable Trust and a historic “experience” and during the Summer is open for visits at weekends ( sufficient volunteers permitting!) In particular a warm welcome is provided for any war veterans of any Nationality in a unique historical environment and, weather permitting, possibly take a trip to the the mouth of the River Stour at Pegwell Bay passing several Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and historic quays.
The vessel has a passenger certificate for up to 12 passengers on the river Stour down to the mouth of the Estuary in Pegwell Bay.
